Mobile and Desktop APP on Windows 8.0 for National Train Enquiry System (NTES) Commenced

A new mobile app and desktop app on Windows 8 platform for train enquiry as an enhancement to National Train Enquiry System (NTES) has been developed by Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS), the IT wing of Indian Railways in consultation with and support from Microsoft. NTES is the backend system which provides information to the public about train running on near real time basis through various interfaces like nationwide unique rail enquiry number 139, website (www.trainenquiry.com), mobile interfaces, Touch Screens, face to face enquiry and Display Boards at stations. The NTES app is now available for download and public use from today onwards i.e. 23rd April 2014. As the first step the App has been started for Windows 8.0 and subsequently the app will be developed for other mobile platforms.
A new interface of NTES website along with Mobile version was launched in September 2013 earlier which received wide appreciation by the travelling public and has been quite useful in meeting the requirements of passengers.
A strong need was felt for launching the mobile app with richer user interface keeping in view the current technology trends and which can be downloaded on the device and comfortably made use for train running related enquiries.
The current Mobile application has the following main features:-
“Spot your train” - This query offers information about a train. Current running status, expected time of arrival/expected time of departure (ETA/ETD) at the queried station can be easily known through this query.
“Live Station” - This query has been given to replicate the display boards at station. One can see the trains expected to arrive/depart at any station in next 2 or 4 hours.
“Train Schedule”-This provides complete schedule of a train with all public stoppages enroute and schedule arrival/departure at the station, distance and day count.
“Trains between Stations” - One can find out the list of all types of trains available between any two stations over Indian Railways.
“Cancelled Trains”  - This query displays all trains marked as cancelled on Indian Railways. The option displays trains which are cancelled through entire route as well as trains which are cancelled on partial route.
“Rescheduled Trains” -This query displays all trains marked as rescheduled on Indian Railways. The option displays trains’ rescheduled timings.
“Diverted Trains” – This query displays all trains marked as diverted on Indian Railways.
CRIS, has constantly been involved in taking new initiatives and developing various applications for Railway users and interfaces for general public to provide quality information about train running and other services with enhanced user experiences. Member Traffic, Railway Board, Shri D.P.Pandey while reviewing the IT projects with MD/CRIS and other officers of Railway Board and CRIS on 22ndApril, 2014 appreciated the Mobile app developed by CRIS and expressed his hope that the app will be well received by mobile users and will certainly add great value to the services.

Kejriwal announces anti-corruption helpline

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday announced a helpline, which he said will help trap government employees who demand bribes.
Mr. Kejriwal told the media that anyone who is asked to pay a bribe by any official in the capital should seek help on 2735 7169.
“This is a helpline number, not a complaint number,” he said.
Once the details of the complainant is taken down, the anti-corruption wing of the Delhi administration will explain how to do a sting operation vis-a-vis the corrupt using the recording device of one’s mobile phone.
“The idea is to inject fear among bribe seekers,” Mr. Kejriwal said. “Now an officer demanding bribe won’t know if you are recording him on your mobile phone or not.”
The vigilance department has deployed a sufficient number of employees for this task, the chief minister said. If necessary, Delhi Police personnel would also chip in, he added.
“Every citizen is now an anti-corruption crusader (in Delhi),” he said.
The helpline would function from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Mr. Kejriwal had announced after taking oath Dec 28 that he would announce a helpline soon to trap bribe takers.
He said the project got delayed as he found the anti-corruption department was badly understaffed.

When you should not use your Credit card!

Credit card is one of the most important financial inventions in modern times. However, this much-sought after boon can be a real bane to your finances if not used with care. Here are a few instances when you should restrict the use of credit cards in order to keep your finances in order.

Using credit cards for everyday expenses: This is one of the most common instances when people use credit cards - to buy their day to day items. While using credit cards to purchase groceries and household items is not always bad, using it regularly may result in your overspending and crossing your monthly budget. Always draw up your budget for such purchases and use your credit cards within this limit. Beyond this, it is better to use cash or debit cards.

Using credit cards for cash advances: Drawing money from an ATM through your credit card to meet emergencies is an easy way to combat cash shortage; but have you realised the impact it will cause on your finances? Not only is the
interest rate charged on the advanced amount exorbitant at 2.5%-3.5% per month, but this also gets charged from day one itself. Besides you will also have to pay a flat transaction charge as well.

During the months you have restricted cash inflows: Credit cards come with a free credit period of 20-50 days. If you do not pay your bills within the due date, you will be charged a hefty late payment fee, high interest of 2.5%-3.5% per month and also taxes on these charges. Hence if you think you will not be able to generate cash flows to make payment on your credit card within the due date, it is best to refrain from using it.

Using credit cards when you travel abroad: When you use your credit card for transactions in a foreign country, you are usually required to pay a charge on foreign currency transactions. Also, do not forget the exchange rate fluctuations, which determine the amount you will have to pay. If you instead opt for a prepaid currency card, it will help you better.

Using credit cards only to accumulate reward points: In order to attract customers, credit card companies offer various offers and high reward points on purchases made. While accumulating reward points is good, spending on your card only for this reason is not very healthy. You will soon realise that even though you have high reward points on your card, you will have to pay hefty bills, sometimes even on unnecessary purchases made without forethought.

When you shop at unsecure websites: Online shopping has off late become very popular. While it is a convenient way of shopping, you must refrain from using your credit card and sharing confidential information on websites which are not secure. Always check for security levels before making credit card payments in such cases

HOW TO FILE AN RTI APPLICATION

An RTI application can be made on a sheet of plain paper and can have any number of questions. It should be addressed to the public information officer of the department or organisation concerned. Rs.10/- should be paid as application fee by cash or through postal order, court fee stamp or demand draft. Questions should be direct and leave no room for the information officer to give vague replies. Information officer has to reply within 30 days of receipt of the application, failing which he is liable to a fine of 250 per day. Appeal can be filed with the head of the department in which the application was filed, if the information officer fails to reply within the deadline. Second appeal can be filed before the central or state information commission if applicant is not satisfied with the replies.
According to Section 2(f) of the RTI Act, information means any material in any form, including records, documents, memos, e-mails , press releases, circulars, contracts, samples, models, data held in any electronic form and information relating to any private body which can be accessed by a public authority under any other law in force.
File an RTI application in 5 simple steps:
1. Identify the department/subject of your query. Is it a state or a central subject? Keep in mind that different rules apply even though they fall under the same Act.
2. Do a little background research. Find out what information falls under the purview of the department concerned.
3. Phrase your questions wisely and precisely. Ask for a copy of the documents. Fill up the RTI application form (application form given).
4. Attach court fee stamp or Indian Postal Order of worth Rs 10 with the application and keep a copy of it with you for future reference.
5. Post your application or hand it over personally to the ‘TAPAL” also called as Inward/Outward section of the respective department.
The essential requirements of an application filed under the RTI Act are:
(a) The applicant should be a citizen of India.
(b) The application should contain the particulars of information sought.
(c) The evidence of payment of application fee should be enclosed.
(d) The address of the applicant should be available for sending a reply.
Personal details except those necessary for contacting an applicant are neither required to be mentioned nor can be called for by the PIO.
